A Father’s Voice: Second Fiddle

Posted on Wednesday 7 June 2006

Welcome to another issue of A Father’s Voice, my monthly column giving voice to the challenges and rewards of being an involved father while working full-time.

I wrote this piece, Second Fiddle, during the worst period for me in putting our children to bed, a little over a year ago. They were about two and only wanted to be with Mommy. It was after this experience that we decided to have me put them to bed myself and that changed everything for the better.

Great podcast! I can vividly imagine what you’re talking about. In our house, there are mommy days and daddy days, solely determined by our daughter. It can be a bit sad when you’re “not good enough” for your own daughter, but I’m thankful that, so far, it happens infrequently and isn’t limited to one of us. I hope things improve for you. It sounds like you al are doing the right things.

Because of the lack of time with his mother, Elijah, especially, is having a rough time with not seeing Gem enough. When I went to take them up to bed, Elijah got very upset that I was putting him to bed instead of Mommy. That’s a wonderful feeling. [...]
